Common Clutch Problems

• Slippage: This is the most common clutch problem. You may notice the engine racing, without transferring power to the gears or wheels. Slippage is usually caused by a worn clutch disc, or damage through age, heat or poor driving. In these cases, the clutch needs replacing.
  
  Note: Beware of mechanics quoting for clutch repairs rather than clutch replacement. Professional repairers, like Home Tune mobile mechanics, know that a worn or damaged clutch must be replaced.
  
  
• Clutch release problems: This is another common clutch problem. You may experience:
  • Clutch chatter: a vibrating or grinding noise when engaging the clutch
  • Clutch grab: the clutch does not move smoothly and 'grabs' abruptly when you release the clutch
  • Clutch not releasing: shifting gears is difficult or you cannot engage the gears at all.
    
    
• Shuddering clutch: Your car shudders when you take off in first gear, especially when reversing. This may mean your engine mounts are damaged or loose, otherwise you need clutch repairs.
